Fumbling Calamities

Fu-On Chung’s painting practice is typified by a sensibility of confusion, exuberance and excess. 'Fumbling Calamities' charts the course of this painter as he stumbles, wobbles and fumbles his way towards a new body of work. For this painter, concreteness is jettisoned in favour for the elusive, seriousness is discarded for frivolity, and insipid greys are forced to succumb to glorious fields of colour. Fumbling Calamities utilizes the arena of ‘the canvas’ to explore the potential for excess to generate new modes of sensory encounter through the mimicry, invention and recombination of forms and painterly motifs.
